Fly To Skopje, Macedonia
Skopje is Macedonia’s largest city and capital. Home to about 500 000 people, Skopje has an animated history having been occupied by Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Yugoslavian empires over the ages. Despite its long history, today it is a modern city owing to it being reconstructed after an earthquake in 1963 that destroyed 75% of its buildings. Skopje has long been shared by Christians and Muslims, who still come together at the fascinating Old Bazaar, one of the Balkans' largest markets.

See and do
The main symbol of Skopje is the Warrior on a Horse – a statue and fountain in the centre of Macedonia Square. It is thought to depict Alexander the Great and was built in Florence. When you enter the Square, look out for a marked place near the shopping mall entrance as it was here that the house of Mother Theresa used to stand. She was born and lived there until she was 18 years old. Kale Fortress is another notable icon. It stands on the highest hill in the city of Skopje, offering wonderful views.
The City Park is a large area right in the centre of Skopje. Part of it is a museum with a couple of monuments. The park is a great place for a walk and there is a small lake as well as tennis courts, an amusement park, restaurants, cafes and the city zoo as well as a stadium.
The Ottoman Inns are a must-visit when in Skopje. Kapan Han is one of three remaining caravanserais which are still standing in the old bazaar. The Museum of Archaeology houses the National Archives as well as the Constitutional Court while still serving primarily as a museum. There are plenty of churches to see in Skopje, including St. Bogorodica which was built in 1835 and is known as the protector of the city. Mosques are aplenty too. Mustafa Pasha Mosque stands above the Old Bazaar and is possibly one of the most attractive Islamic buildings in Macedonia. There is a lovely rose garden on the grounds as well as great views over a bazaar.
There’s also lots to do in Skopje like exploring the Matka Canyon where there is a lake and hydrodam. There are a variety of tours for climbers and the Bear’s Cave restaurant is not to be missed. The restaurant has been built into a cave. A walk of Skopje is also a must. Take your time and learn about the sights you come across at your own pace. There are two self-guided city walks – one through the old town and one through the modern part of the city.
Skopje offers a great and efficient bus network. There are public buses, private buses and hotels can help you with understanding bus routes and fares. Taxis are a slightly more expensive way to get around.
