Motherland Coffee Co: the home of coffee in Joburg

One of the trickiest things about being a visitor to Joburg (in my opinion) is finding  a coffee shop that feels like home. Most visitors to Joburg are there for work – let’s be honest – and there’s nothing more important than having somewhere to hide out in between meetings… Somewhere warm, and cosy (or light and airy, depending on the season) that lets you unwind, relax, recharge and put on your game face for your next meeting.

Allow me to introduce you to just such a spot: the Motherland Coffee Company. This little treasure of a coffee shop is something of an insider secret. Although it’s technically in Rosebank Mall (or, more specifically, the Zone Phase 2), it’s tucked away in a corner and the moment you step inside you’ll forget you’re anywhere near a mall.

This is partly because of the vibe, which is warm and friendly – and very relaxed. Each cup of coffee (or tea) comes with a free 1 hour wireless internet voucher, so you’ll find lots of laptops and iPads out as people catch up with necessary (or not so necessary) online news. The coffee itself is superb – a blend of Ethiopian Sidamo and Rwandan Kivu beans, beautifully roasted, with a full bodied mandarin and citrus feel and a rich chocolatey caramel finish. Are you drooling yet?

The Motherland Coffee Co. is passionate about their coffee. They’re passionate about their story. And they’re passionate about Fair Trade – in fact, it’s a principle that spreads throughout their business, and you can feel it.

So if you’re looking for a guilt-free cup of coffee, head to Motherland Coffee Co… In fact, if you’re looking for any kind of cup of coffee, I would recommend you head over there. It’s a slice of coffee-flavoured calm amidst the hustle and bustle of being a visitor to Joburg.
