Cancel your lunch plans and stop whatever you’re doing. There’s a new Mexican spot in town and you simply have to try it. Trust me, I’ve driven past Tortilla Modern Mexico a few times in the last couple of months, and kept meaning to pop in. Now that I have, I am kicking myself for waiting so long.
They offer what is quite simply the finest burrito in Cape Town. Hands down.
They don’t only have burritos on the menu, of course – you can also have tacos and nachos (although they don’t call them that), salads or ‘naked burritos’ (without the wrap). The choice of fillings is simple but superb: vegetarian, marinated chicken, marinated prawn, braised beef or steak. I have only been once (today) so I haven’t tried all of them, but the prawns were absolutely delicious: fresh, packed with flavour and a good size. On top of whatever filling you have, there are all kinds of options – a number of different salsa choices (depending how hot you like your burrito), chopped jalapeno, coriander rice, fresh lettuce, tomato salsa, two kinds of beans, sour cream and cheese. You can add guacamole if you want to pay a little extra.
Once you’ve selected your version of the perfect burrito, it’s wrapped up in tin foil and handed to you, to take away or eat right there. They also do a selection of fabulous fresh juices – the cucumber, lime and mint is the perfect cool counterbalance to the zingy jalapeno and salsa.
The vibe is relaxed but modern, friendly but efficient. They’re open until 6pm so you can grab a burrito on your way home (and they offer 10% off after 4pm) and they have a loyalty card so that your 10th meal is free.
What are you waiting for? The most delicious burrito in Cape Town is calling your name… It’s at Tortilla Modern Mexico, waiting to meet you.
