Best time to visit Pristina

Kosovo has a continental climate, meaning very cold winters (December – February) and very warm summers (June – September) in Pristina. Visiting Pristina during the winter can be rewarding, especially since the country celebrates its independence on 17 February with concerts, fireworks and several events. Visit Pristina during the summer for the best weather conditions, but be prepared for a higher volume of tourists and higher accommodation costs. For comfortable weather and ideal costs, the best time to visit Pristina is during spring (March – May) and autumn (October – November). Avoid late October to early November though, that’s when the Prishtina Jazz Festival takes place.

Visa & Customs

South African passport holders will need a Serbian visa to enter Serbia and visit Pristina in Kosovo. Make sure that your passport is valid for six months beyond your departure date from Serbia, and that it has blank pages for entry stamps. You may also need a transit visa if you are travelling to Serbia via another country.

Health & Safety

Make sure you are up to date on all your routine vaccinations and preventative measures before visiting Pristina. These include vaccines for MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella, polio, and your yearly flu shot. You should also get vaccines for hepatitis A since there is a problem of contaminated food and water in Kosovo. You may also need vaccines for hepatitis B and rabies, but these depend on your activities while in Pristina.

Make sure to stay alert and cautious at all times while in Pristina, as there is a serious crime problem. Avoid isolated areas and stick to well-lit areas. Avoid staying out well beyond midnight.
