About O.R. Tambo International Airport

About O.R. Tambo International Airport

O.R. Tambo International Airport (IATA: JNB), situated in the Kempton Park district approximately 20 kilometres east of Johannesburg, is South Africa’s largest airport and the busiest aviation hub on the African continent. Used as a high-altitude test airport for the Concorde in the 1970s, OR Tambo now handles over 21 million passengers annually and offers scheduled flights to all six inhabited continents — one of only four airports in the world to do so.

Originally opened in 1952 as Jan Smuts Airport, it was renamed O.R. Tambo International Airport in 2006 to honour Oliver Reginald Tambo, the anti-apartheid activist and long-serving ANC president. International airlines serving JNB include Emirates, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Air France, and many more. Domestic airlines include South African Airways, FlySafair, Airlink, and LIFT. JNB is approximately a 30-minute drive from Johannesburg’s city centre.

Overview

O.R. Tambo International Airport (IATA: JNB) is the largest and busiest airport in South Africa, and one of the most important aviation hubs on the African continent. Located in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni — in the heart of Gauteng — it serves the twin metropolitan areas of Johannesburg and Pretoria, collectively home to over 15 million people.

The airport was originally founded in 1952 as Jan Smuts Airport, named after the South African statesman Jan Christiaan Smuts, who was the only person to have signed the peace treaties ending both World War I and World War II. In 1994, following the end of apartheid, the airport was renamed Johannesburg International Airport. On 27 October 2006, it was renamed once more — becoming O.R. Tambo International Airport in honour of Oliver Reginald Tambo (1917–1993), the anti-apartheid activist and president of the African National Congress who spent decades in exile leading the struggle against apartheid from abroad. OR Tambo is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in South Africa’s democratic history.

OR Tambo International Airport is one of only a handful of airports in the world that offers scheduled non-stop flights to all six inhabited continents — alongside Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Dubai. This makes JNB an exceptionally well-connected hub for onward travel to Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Australasia, and across Africa.

Ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the airport underwent a major renovation programme including the construction of a new Central Terminal building, a new International Pier with nine additional contact stands (four of which are Airbus A380-compatible), and the opening of the Gautrain station directly inside the terminal. The airport has a capacity to handle up to 28 million passengers annually, and processed 17.8 million passengers in the fiscal year ending March 2024, with continued recovery growth year-on-year.

Popular flight routes to O.R. Tambo International Airport include Cape Town to Johannesburg, East London to Johannesburg, Durban to Johannesburg and George to Johannesburg. Compare and book with FlySafair, South African Airways, or Airlink.
