The Emirates Air Line Cable is one of London’s newest attractions

Whether or not you’ve been to the Old Smoke before, it’s difficult to tire of London as a travel destination! It’s an amazing melting pot that has managed to preserve its old world British charm while mixing in a surprising multitude of cultures, ideas and new attractions.

Emirates Airline Cable Car

Like any respectful world-traveller, you might have ticked the London Eye box on one of your trips to London. Beautiful experience, amazing view and great memories! Now another challenge adorns London’s ever expanding skyline - the brand new Emirates Air Cable Car! Yes, since June 2012 London has been a flying experience richer, as the famous Dubai-based airline decided to sponsor for the next 10 years the attraction launched during the 2012 Olympics.

This delightful cable car system bridges the North and South of London (it goes from the Royal Docks to the Greenwich Peninsula), crossing over the old river Thames in just 5 minutes. Don’t you just love technology?

Emirates Cable Car Map

The first British urban cable car gives you the chance of a stylish experience, calling this journey ‘a flight’, the tickets – ‘boarding passes’  and dressing the staff as flight attendants; now, how cool is that? You will be up in the sky at 90 metres above the famous O2 Arena, looking over the London City Airport, the Olympic Park, Canary Wharf, Thames Barrier and the City, and hopefully you will experience it on a clear, sunny day, so you get to enjoy it all! There’s never been a more scenic way to get from A to B.
The ‘flight’ may take between 5 to 10 minutes (shorter during peak hours because of commuters, and longer in the evenings, when you get more time to enjoy the view), it covers 1.1 km (0.68 miles) and each car holds a maximum of ten people that need to be seated during the entire journey (2 wheelchairs or 2 bicycles can also go in).
The opening hours are weekdays - 7 am to 8 pm, Saturdays – 8 am to 8 pm and Sundays - 9 am to 8 pm. Don’t plan this experience on Christmas Day though, as it is the only day Emirates Air Line  does not operate. The fares are £4.30/adult boarding pass and £2.20/child boarding pass, and children under 5 travel free. The way to get a discount is to use the Oyster Card. With an Oyster Card the fares will are £3.20/adult boarding pass and £1.60/child boarding pass. There is also the option of a Multi Journey Boarding Pass. Getting to the Emirates Air Line

Finding the Emirates Air Line is easy. You need to get to the North Greenwich tube station and once you go out of the station, turn right and you will see the Emirates Greenwich Peninsula. The other terminal, the Emirates Royal Docks, is to be found on the Northern side of Victoria Dock, near the Royal Victoria DLR station. Normally the queues are not so long but if you have the Oyster Card, you will definitely skip the queue and move quicker. Expect some crowds though on weekends.
Experience the new ‘flight’ that the British capital has to offer without fearing any form of jetlag. Ready for boarding, next stop London!
